چکیده

Detecting encrypted traffic is increasingly important for deep packet inspection (DPI) to improve the performance of intrusion detection systems. We propose a machine learning approach with several randomness tests to achieve high accuracy detection of encrypted traffic while requiring low overhead incurred by the detection procedure. To demonstrate how effective the proposed approach is, the performance of four classification methods (Näıve Bayesian, Support Vector Machine, CART and AdaBoost) are explored. Our recommendation is to use CART which is not only capable of achieving an accuracy of 99.9% but also up to about 2.9 times more efficient than the second best candidate (Näıve Bayesian).

Classification of encrypted traffic for applications based on statistical features

Traffic classification plays an important role in many aspects of network management such as identifying type of the transferred data, detection of malware applications, applying policies to restrict network accesses and so on. Basic methods in this field were using some obvious traffic features like port number and protocol type to classify the traffic type. However, recent changes in applicat...

Detecting Bot Networks Based On HTTP And TLS Traffic Analysis

Abstract— Bot networks are a serious threat to cyber security, whose destructive behavior affects network performance directly. Detecting of infected HTTP communications is a big challenge because infected HTTP connections are clearly merged with other types of HTTP traffic. Cybercriminals prefer to use the web as a communication environment to launch application layer attacks and secretly enga...

Improving SIEM capabilities through an enhanced probe for encrypted Skype traffic detection

Nowadays, the Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) systems take on great relevance in handling security issues for critical infrastructures as Internet Service Providers. Basically, a SIEM has two main functions: i) the collection and the aggregation of log data and security information from disparate network devices (routers, firewalls, intrusion detection systems, ad hoc probes an...

Can encrypted traffic be identified without port numbers, IP addresses and payload inspection?

Identifying encrypted application traffic represents an important issue for many network tasks including quality of service, firewall enforcement and security. Solutions should ideally be both simple – therefore efficient to deploy – and accurate. This paper presents a machine learning based approach employing simple Packet Header feature sets and statistical flow feature sets without using the...

Detecting Malignant TLS Servers Using Machine Learning Techniques

TLS uses X.509 certificates for server authentication. A X.509 certificate is a complex document and various innocent errors may occur while creating/ using it. Also, many certificates belong to malicious websites and should be rejected by the client and those web servers should not be visited. Usually, when a client finds a certificate that is doubtful using the traditional tests, it asks for ...
